When True Crime is a Divine AdventureJul 31, 2021
People love a good story. That’s one of the reasons why I use books from the true crime genre to draw listeners into my podcast. We can use the themes we see in those stories to talk about spiritual truths about good and evil, forgiveness, and sharing the love of God by serving others when we delve into these personal stories. The subject matter can sometimes be difficult and uncomfortable, but they can help us look at true crime content in a whole new way.
Now I want to share another kind of story with you, one that helped me look at spiritual disciplines in a whole new way. Usually when I hear the words “spiritual disciplines,” I think “time-consuming,” “difficult,” and - worst of all - “uncomfortable.” Don’t get me wrong, I want to love these practices. I know that God calls us to engage with Him through them. But I’ve never equated them with joy and purpose. Until now.
Forget everything (well, almost everything) you thought you knew about practicing spiritual disciplines. In The Divine Adventure: Spiritual Practices For A Modern-Day Disciple by Rebecca Friedlander, the author shares her own stories of how these disciplines have enriched her life, and gives very practical advice on how we can easily apply them in ours. Each chapter reminds us of the ever-present love of God and gently guides us to join Him on a deeper level through practicing spiritual disciplines.
This book is a fresh and uncomplicated approach to meeting God on the journey He has planned for each of us. I’m definitely a planner when it comes to taking a trip. It gives me such peace and confidence that my trip will be a success when I know that I have carefully packed everything that I need to get me to my destination. It’s bliss to have a detailed schedule of what I want to see and do on the way and once I’m there. Our spiritual journeys deserve no less planning, and The Divine Adventure is the perfect checklist to get us ready to go!
This book is full of simple and immensely practical tips to help you:
Recognize the intensity of the journey and prepare accordingly
Yield to God’s plans over your own
Make the journey interactive
Celebrate what is accomplished, and
Rest in God’s amazing love
Reading The Divine Adventure has made me excited to plan a new journey of practicing spiritual disciplines that I’m sure will deepen my walk with God and maybe even alter the course of my life. I think it will do the same for you.
